Flag Day: Scandinavia/Nordic Countries

I've been obsessed with Scandinavia for as long as I can remember, going back to the days of the American Girls dolls/books (Kirsten was my introduction to the series, maybe this is why?). I've never been there to this day, but its still high on my list of travel destinations, and I always want to read about culture in different Scandinavian countries. I find it all very fascinating.

One thing that ties Scandinavian countries together is not culture, but flags! Every flag follows a similar rubric, which actually does tie them together symbolically and culturally. Check it out:

Sweden

Finland

Norway
Denmark
Iceland
Faroe Islands (betcha didn't know that one!)

I've always loved Finland and Sweden the best (again, for no real reason!), but one fact that you should know is that Denmark's flag came first, and is the oldest flag still being used today (word has it, its been around since the 1200s, but, erm ... reliable history may mix with fiction to some extent, who knows). The Nordic Cross represents Christianity, and you should definitely click on this link here to find out way more than you ever wanted to know about the Nordic Cross & its history in the world's flags.

On that note ... happy Friday! I am out of energy but have a shoot tonight, so I'm going to have to channel it from somewhere. Tomorrow morning marks my return to the farmers market, and then tons of photo editing & cleaning all weekend. What are your weekend plans?
