Stuff on a Monday

...that's like snakes on a plane, in case you were wondering.

And yes, that was a non-sequitur, its Monday, what else do you expect?

But anyway, on to the weekend, and the week ahead.

This weekend (which went way too quickly, of course) turned out to be largely a weekend of food. Which I am in no way complaining about!

Saturday started off with a trip to the farmers market, something I haven't done in quite a while. I ran 2+ miles to get there, just another ramping up of my distance running again after taking quite a while off, so I didn't bring my camera, and that was just fine with me. I managed to pick up some Rancho Gordo "Midnight" black beans (dried--my new money saving method), some shiitake mushrooms, and some vegan artichoke/spinach ravioli from The Pasta Shop's stand (its $10 per package, but its local, handmade & where else are you going to find vegan ravioli?!) before heading home & cooking an epic brunch: tempeh bacon, julienne-cut potato home fries (so good), homemade tomato-cucumber salsa & flour tortillas.

Of course, it was so good that I completely forgot to take a picture of it before it was devoured.

Also on the menu this weekend: the ravioli (so good!) on Saturday night, a delicious tofu scramble (recipe loosely based on that by Drea) on Sunday for brunch, and black bean tacos for Sunday night's dinner, complete with homemade flour tortillas (and more homemade salsa).

Let me just say: I really love the taste of homemade tortillas, and the price (not to mention the nutrition facts) is right. But they are such a pain in the ass to make, it almost makes it not worthwhile. I end up sweating, cursing viciously, and totally out of it by the time I'm done making just half a dozen tortillas. The culprit: the evil rolling pin. I seriously hate that thing! I'm going to have to start lifting weights just to be able to use it. I think the real problem is that tortillas have to be rolled so thinly, and I have very, very little counter space, and the combination of all these things plus a huge rolling pin means lots of effort & little gain per roll. But I guess I should really be judging by the final product ... and we ate all the tortillas last night, so I think I should just stop griping and call it a success. After all, the price really is right.

And finally...I have loved these videos ever since the first was released (2009?) but this one just has to take the cake. I can't shower enough praise on the people who make these videos possible, and since everyone can stand to spend more time reflecting on the unity of our humanity, and how we need to help Syria, and how beautiful it looks when you look down & see your keyboard stained with tears, please watch:

I am really looking forward to this week. Most of all: a challenging 5-mile sunset run on Thursday. Other than that? I'll be shooting a show on Friday, but that's it ... really trying to keep a low profile this month. August is going to be really crazy in terms of photography so I am going to need a break. No more sacrificing my health for the sake of my job(s). How it took me 30 years to learn that, I do not know ...
